Registering a Birth

πŸ“ Find this in the app: the heart icon on a pregnant mare β€” Admin Panel β†’ Stables β†’ Boarded Horses (/admin/stables/horses), or on the mare's own detail page

Once a mare you've marked as pregnant actually foals, you record the outcome from the same breeding popup you used to log her cycle and insemination. Registering a live birth automatically creates a draft record for the foal, already linked back to the dam β€” no need to re-type her pedigree or add the foal as a separate horse by hand.

Opening the birth form

Click the mare's heart icon to open her breeding popup. Once she has a stored insemination, a Register birth button appears alongside it. Opening it brings up the birth form.

What you enter

  • Foaling date
  • Outcome β€” live foal, twins, stillborn, or lost
  • For a live outcome (single or twins), one row per foal:
    • Sex β€” colt or filly
    • Color (optional)
  • Notes (optional)

What happens next

The mare's insemination is rolled into her breeding history β€” so a mare bred every year builds up a real record over time instead of that season's details being lost as soon as the next cycle starts.

  • Live foal or twins: a draft record is created for each foal, with the dam already linked and the pedigree pre-filled one generation from hers. The draft stays off public listings until you finish it. After you save, you're taken straight to each new foal's record so you can pick up right where the birth form left off β€” give it a name and any remaining details, then take it out of draft.
  • Stillborn or lost: the outcome is still recorded in the mare's breeding history, but no foal record is created.

What's not included yet

  • Registering a birth is currently admin-only β€” there's no member-facing entry point, even for a member-owned mare.
  • No reminder is sent for studbook registration deadlines. Studbook requirements for registering a foal vary by studbook, breed, and country, so check your own studbook's rules directly.
  • There's no "this mare's offspring" or "this stallion's offspring" search yet. The foal's link back to its dam is stored, but nothing in the app queries it yet.
  • This only applies to your own mares. Covering records for visiting mares bred to your stallions still stop at "confirmed in foal" β€” that tracker doesn't yet have a birth outcome or foal-linking step.
